Snail Gladiators
When it comes to art, the most fulfilling to me is the kind that can immerse you in a fictional world. I create art of this variety, because cartooning is an effective vehicle for storytelling. Thinking up stories and creating characters is something I have done as far back as I can remember and I wanted to finally assemble many of these ideas into a more coherent physical form. Structuring the pieces like a conceptual pitch is important to me, because I need to communicate elements of this world without overwhelming the viewer, while still showing enough information to grab interest.
This concept is a sort of amalgamation of the types of stories that interest me. I have always gravitated towards science fiction and comedy, so my goal is to encapsulate both of these within a cartoon. Cinema of the 1980s has definitely played an influence on what I value in a story. In what was a decade exploding with absurdity and creativity, many of these films have left my mind racing with thoughts about the stories that I want to tell.
I chose to create the final product digitally, because most contemporary cartooning is done in this medium, particularly in that seen on television and film. If I ever want to work in this field, then I should be striving to emulate the products of this industry. By presenting my work as a pitch, I hope to be setting myself in the right direction for a career where I can create stories that will let the viewer’s imagination run loose like so many other storytellers have done for me.
